In short
Your dictations, recordings and settings are stored on your PC. For cloud recognition, Zack Typing sends the recording to Zack’s recognition service, which keeps the result for 7 days. You decide whether recordings are saved and how long dictations stay, and you can delete everything at any time.
- Stored on
- Your PC, in Zack Typing’s data folder
- Sent for recognition
- The recording, plus matching dictionary terms
- Kept by the service
- Results for 7 days
- Recordings on your PC
- Optional, at most 30 days
Choose what Zack Typing keeps
- Open the settings, choose “Advanced” and expand “History”.
- Turn off “Save audio” if you do not want recordings kept. Zack Typing then keeps only the text.
- Set “Keep dictations” to 7, 30 or 60 days, or to ∞ to keep them until you delete them.
- To clear the history, click “Delete all” next to “Dictations & audio files” and confirm.
What does Zack Typing store on your PC?
- the text of each dictation, the recognized original and its name
- the recording, if “Save audio” is on
- the app you dictated into
- your dictionary, chips and settings
“Storage used” under “Advanced” → “History” shows how much space the recordings take. “Copy to clipboard” is on by default, so each dictation also stays on the Windows clipboard until you copy something else.
How long does Zack Typing keep dictations and recordings?
| “Keep dictations” | What happens |
|---|---|
| 7, 30 or 60 days | Dictations you have not renamed, edited or inserted for that long are deleted. 30 days is the default. |
| ∞ | The text stays until you delete it. |
| Any setting | Recordings are deleted 30 days after they were made. |
What is sent, and where does it go?
| When | What leaves your PC | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud dictation or audio file | The recording, your language setting, matching dictionary terms and your “Custom instructions” | Zack’s recognition service |
| A chip such as “Improve” | The dictation text and the chip’s instruction | Zack’s service |
| Automatic name | Up to the first 2,000 characters of the dictation | Zack’s service |
| Learning dictionary words | The passages you corrected | Zack’s service |
| Offline model | Nothing | Stays on your PC |
| Own API key | The same requests | Straight to the provider you chose |
The service keeps recognition results for 7 days when you are signed in. Results from the practice dictation without an account are kept for 24 hours.
While you are online and have credits, Zack Typing uses cloud recognition, even with an offline model installed. When the offline model takes over is explained in offline dictation.
How do you delete your data?
- One dictation: right-click it and choose “Delete”.
- The whole history: “Delete all” under “Advanced” → “History”.
- Everything in the app: “Reset all data” under “Advanced” → “Maintenance” deletes all dictations, API keys and settings and signs you out. Downloaded offline models stay.
- Your account: under “Account”, “Export account data” saves a copy to your downloads folder, and “Delete account” removes your account and credits. End an active subscription first.
Does Zack Typing send diagnostic data?
No. The diagnostic log stays on your PC. Turn it off with “Keep local diagnostic log” under “Advanced” → “Maintenance”. If you report a problem, “Export” next to “Diagnostic log” saves the file so you can attach it yourself.
Related questions
Can I dictate without sending audio anywhere?
Yes, in two cases: without a connection, or once your credits are used up and you choose to dictate locally. Then an offline model recognizes your speech on your PC. With your own API key, you can also point recognition at a compatible speech server on your own PC.
Does deleting my account delete my dictations?
No. Your dictations are on your PC, not in your account. Remove them in Zack Typing with “Delete all” or “Reset all data”.
What changes with my own API key?
Recordings and texts go from your PC straight to your provider, and its terms apply. See dictating with your own API key.
