How do I teach dictation names and technical terms?

Updated

In short

Add the words to your personal dictionary: in the Zack Typing settings under “Dictionary”, type the term and click “Add”. Zack Typing passes your terms to speech recognition and to the chips as preferred spellings. It can also learn terms from the corrections you make and asks first when it is unsure.

With the terms in the dictionary, recognition spells them the way you want.

Step by step

  1. Open the Zack Typing settings and choose “Dictionary”.
  2. Under “Vocabulary”, type a term into the field “Enter a word or phrase…”, for example “Siobhan” or “Kubernetes”.
  3. Press Enter or click “Add”. The term appears in the list.
  4. Dictate a test sentence that contains the term.
  5. To change a term, double-click it. The cross removes it.

What belongs in the dictionary?

  • Names of people, for example colleagues or clients: Siobhan, Oyelaran
  • Companies and products: Hoffmann Ltd, Zack Typing
  • Jargon from your field: Kubernetes, anamnesis
  • Abbreviations you say often: OKR, KPI

Write each term exactly as it should appear. For cloud recognition, Zack Typing sends the relevant terms with the recording as preferred spellings, and chips such as “Improve” get them too. If a dictation has more terms than fit, Zack Typing tells you how many it could not include.

The dictionary raises the chance of a correct spelling; it does not guarantee it. A term you mumble, or one that sounds like a common word, can still come out wrong.

How does Zack Typing learn from my corrections?

The card “Automatic dictionary” has the switch “Learn words automatically”. Zack Typing then looks at the corrections you make to a dictation in Zack Typing. If you also turn on “Read corrections after inserting”, it briefly reads what you change in the field where the text was inserted. That second switch is off until you turn it on.

Zack Typing has these corrections evaluated with AI. Only spelling corrections of names, products, technical terms, abbreviations and foreign words count; rewording, style changes and deleted sentences are ignored.

If you make the same correction at least twice and there is no conflicting spelling, Zack Typing adds the term by itself. It is marked “Automatically learned”, and you can edit or remove it like any other term.

What happens when Zack Typing is unsure?

When a correction is unclear, or you have written a term in different ways, Zack Typing does not add it. It shows the term under “Suggestions” instead. Click the check mark to add it, the cross to dismiss it, or double-click to fix the spelling first.

At most once a day, and never while you are dictating, Zack Typing also asks in a notice, for example “Custom term: Oyelaran?”, with “Add to dictionary”, “Review” and “Dismiss”. Dismissed terms are listed under “Rejected”; “Allow suggestions again” brings them back.

Which data leaves my PC?

For cloud recognition, the audio and the relevant dictionary terms go to the recognition service. Learning from corrections sends the corrected passages for evaluation. More in what happens to your recordings.

Does learning work without internet?

No. Evaluating corrections needs a connection. Terms already in your dictionary stay there.

Can Zack Typing learn a wrong spelling?

It only adds a term on its own after the same correction at least twice and without conflicts. If a wrong term slips in, remove it with the cross.
